In September 2024, Hurricane Helene swept over the eastern coast of the United States, causing flooding on a catastrophic level. Many lost their homes to flooding or landslides. There are still huge scars left from the flooding caused by Helene, but the people are rebuilding.
What we did in North Carolina was unique. Mobile homes were delivered to the site, and we hooked up the electric, water, plumbing, and each one gets a deck at the front door and back door. At the end, some of the ladies furnished the homes with beds, towels, cooking utensils, silverware, a couch and bedding to make the home ready to move in. The mobile home, furniture, and furnishings were all donated through many, many donors.
While we were there, we were able to give away the first two mobile homes to two ladies. The first lady had lost her home in a landslide along with her aunt and uncles. She was fortunately away at the time watching her grandchildren. Her aunt and uncle both unfortunately passed away in the landslide that took their homes, and her aunt was found 3 blocks away. The second lady's home had water in it, and she had no other housing option. She was living in her deteriorating, molding home with her elderly mom. We were able to give these ladies a whole new beginning that they could move on from the limbo that they had been stuck in since September 2024.
Most of the time while we were in NC, we were working on a gentleman’s home, building the decks for his mobile home. He is, and hopefully for not much longer, living in a borrowed camper. He was very appreciative of what we were doing and had lunch and drinks for us almost every day. A cool thing to add is that he owns a Ford Model A. The car was under water, but he cleaned it out and it works just fine!
